“—ent—”

A metallic thump shot through the dark. He drifted alone.… No, that’s only what it wanted him to think. He was never alone anymore.

“Trent.”

A name. His name. The realization brought on a paralyzing flurry of panic, the sizzle of electric butterflies—but he knew even then he wouldn’t remember the threat: it would sink deep again, lurking in a cubbyhole of his lizard brain—

Trent was in the Denali, stretched over the front seats like a gutshot corpse. Morning sunlight cut around the silhouette of a figure staring in at him.

“R-Rita?”

She opened the door. “Are you okay?”

He felt stiff and crumply, a stick of wicker lawn furniture left out in the snow. He let Rita take his wrist—he had no choice, really, weak as a kitten—and help him from the truck.

He was in the driveway of their new home. Where had he been? How had he gotten here? Fright blitzed through his chest at the realization that he had no earthly clue.

“I’m okay… must’ve been working late.”

He ransacked his memory circuits, but the past hours—days?—were sunk into a black hole. His overalls were starchy with sweat and his mouth tasted like he’d been chewing on live rodents.

“I wasn’t drinking, Rita.” He rubbed his face, furred with five-day beard. “I don’t know, exactly, but I wasn’t boozing.”

“That’s not what I think you were doing.”

The sun glinting off the shingles hurt his eyes. The whole house hurt.

“Have you come back? Both of you?”

Rita said, “Yes, we’re here.”

The relief was too much to bear. He collapsed into Rita, his arms swallowing her.

“Oh, thank God,” he breathed into her hair. “It’s going to be different this time, I swear.”

“I know, baby.” Rita grunted with the effort of keeping him upright. “You’ve always meant well.”

She helped him inside. The house accepted them, its door closing like a mouth.
